Great Architecture – The Shard
Posted on 21. Nov, 2008 by Mike Halsey in architecture

The Shard, also known as the London Bridge Tower, The Shard of Glass and the Shard London Bridge, will be a building that, if it actually gets built, will change and redefine the London skyline forever. This 1017 ft. 87 storey glass tower would house offices with private apartments and a hotel above. If completed, and I truly hope it is, this tower will be the tallest building the UK, and tallest building in Europe until a new tower, that’s nowhere near as pretty, gets built in Paris’ Le Defence district in the next few years.
As of the time of writing construction is due to start in early 2009 with a completion date in 2012. It’s looking good too, with the site already being cleared. However the credit crunch may put paid to the project yet. Below is a promotional video for the shard. I think you’ll agree that it’s simply magnificent.
If you are having trouble viewing the video, you can also see it here.
I had a plan, if I earned my millions, to buy two floors of the apartments in this building to have as a single penthouse with an indoor swimming pool (sigh). Still, they’ve not sold it all yet so there’s still time.
