Not pointless, but rather scoped to a small number of scenarios. Consider an IT consultant who in a project needs to have access to demo environment or a secondary environment for certain tasks.

Even though this can be achieved with partitions and dual-boot configs, it is a whole lot more flexible using VHDs.

Also, many consultants have a Technet or MSDN license for their demo environments. This allows them to use any software MS provides, as long as it’s not the main production OS.

So it is not for everyone and certainly not for using older OS installations, but it has it’s uses.

Furthermore, the tool set for using VHDs is the same across virtual or physical installations. This makes life easier for all IT Techs.

    Just my 2 cents…

That is a disappointment, at this point the only reason id boot from a VHD is to run tests in older OSs (Server 2003, Linux). Microsoft is famous for releasing flawed software with intentions of making it better as they update, maybe we can expect this feature to support more OSs as it gets developed?
