Software Pick – Spyware Terminator

For years now I’ve been using Lavasoft Adaware, SpyBot and to a lesser extent Windows Defender (which you can download for Windows XP but is already part of Windows Vista).
Recently a friend had a nasty downloader trojan on his PC that none of these programs, nor his anti-virus software could remove. These thiongs do happen from time to time, the Kournikova virus back in 2001 for instance that could only be removed, seemingly, by AVG Anti Virus and not by any of the bigger commercial packages.
I had to do some searching on the internet to find an alternative package that would do the job. In this search I stumbled upon Spyware Terminator, an excellent piece of free software that provides all types of real-time protection from internet nasties. It removed the offending trojan and found a few other things on his computer too that the other packages had missed. Most importantly it’s fast and doesn’t stop you doing other things on your computer when its running.
It can be a bit annoying if you’re installing a piece of software for instance, popping up alerts right-left-and-centre, all asking permission to allow parts of the software to install themselves into Windows, but there’s also a level of reassurance that comes with that.
I wouldn’t recommend installing its optional extra components. They can install things like an internet toolbar and change some internet settings that are very difficult to change back, but there’s an option to not install these when you do it, just read through the instructions carefully.
Anyway, Spyware Terminator is, I think, excellent value for money at £free and a great program to help protect you and your PC when you’re online.
