If other people use your PC then I’m certain that from time to time they have downloaded something to it they shouldn’t or changed a system setting or two that you’d rather they hadn’t.  This can be annoying at best and at worst, require a complete reinstallation of Windows and all your software.

For Windows XP and Vista there’s a solution called Windows SteadyState, this useful tool, which will come included with Windows 7, can automatically roll back any changes and remove any files downloaded by users that you specify and on a timetable that you specify.

Ideal for internet cafes and libraries, but equally of use in the home, you can specify that your Windows settings are reset to how you would like them when a user logs out, every day or on any other schedule.  Additionally, you can use it to…

  • Uninstall any software someone has installed on your PC automatically
  • Prevent access to drives or partitions containing private information
  • Stop unwanted spyware and viruses getting onto your computer

It even has parental control features to stop your children using certain features or visiting websites you don’t want them to.

This software is useful if for no other reason than it can prevent having to reinstall WiIndows so often.  You know what you do on-line but do you know what websites your family and friends visit and what viruses and nasties could be waiting for them?  You know what software you want installed but do you need someone else installing something, or even an internet browser plug-in that causes Windows to become unstable and crash?

I can thoroughly recommend Windows SteadyState and, even if you live alone, setting up a controlled guest account can prevent a signifcant number of headaches.
